COP 26 President Fiji Visit
The COP26 President, Alok Sharma, visited Fiji from July 26 to 27, 2022, to witness the impacts of climate change in the Pacific. His trip focused on advocating for urgent climate action from major emitters and assessing progress following the Glasgow Climate Pact.
Part of the COP26 President’s visit included traveling to Buretu village in Tailevu (about a 45-minute drive from Suva). There, he observed firsthand the devastating impacts of severe weather and coastal erosion on local Fijian communities.
The primary objective was to ensure that the commitments made at COP26 were honored by the international community, serving as a stepping stone for the COP27 summit in Egypt.
